General Rufus Barringer (Seth Medlin's mother's side of the family) born Cabarrus county, North Carolina, on December 2,1821. Graduated UNC 1842. A lawyer! Served in state assembly 1848 and 1850, and was a presidential elector in 1860. He entered the Confederate service as a captain of the 1st North Carolina Cavalry at the outbreak of the war. Served in all engagements of the Army of Northern Virginia. By June 1, 1864 he was appointed brigadier general. He returned to Charlotte after the war. He died February 3, 1895 and is buried in Charlotte. By his first marriage to one of the six daughters of the Reverend Doctor R. H. Morrison he was a brother-in-law of general D. H. Hill and Stonewall Jackson. The photo to the left will link to a 194K JPEG image. |
