Dr. Lucas was born in Columbia, S.C., but moved to Raleigh, North Carolina as a child and considers the Tar Heel state home.  She completed her undergraduate education at Duke University and attended medical school at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She did her internal medicine residency at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C. and her internship at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, N.C.  Her endocrinology fellowship with medical faculty appointment was completed at Duke University Medical Center.

She is board certified in internal medicine and the subspecialty of endocrinology.  Endocrinology is the subspecialty of Internal Medicine focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of hormonal and glandular problems such as: the pancreas, reproductive system, thyroid disease, diabetes and its complications, pituitary diseases, osteoporosis, calcium metabolism, adrenal gland diseases, growth disorders and disorders of sexual development.

She practiced endocrinology in Little Rock, Arkansas, for two years prior to moving to Atlanta, Georgia in 1988.  From 1988 through June 2000 she was in an internal medicine and endocrinology practice on the north side of Atlanta.   Since 1997 she has been president of The Leland Clinic in Atlanta.  The clinic maintained an ADA certificated diabetes education program and active pharmaceutical clinical research programs.  For the past couple of years she has been voted as one of the top doctors by her fellow Atlanta doctors and one of the physicians they would recommend a family member see for endocrinology care.   She earned her medical radioactive license in 1993 and is experienced in radioactive iodine treatments for hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer.  She has also been licensed in North Carolina to use radioactive iodine.

Her parents built a home at Emerald Isle in 1988 and her family has visited the Bogue Banks for many winter and summer vacations since then.  It was always difficult to leave North Carolina and return to Atlanta.  When the family decision was made to leave Atlanta, it was unclear where to relocate.  Dr. Lucas wanted to move home to North Carolina; Morehead City and Carteret County were the logical and exciting prospects.  Many coastal cities from the pan- handle of Florida to North Carolina were visited and considered for relocation.  Morehead City and Carteret County were superior in terms of doctors, hospitals, and family preference.  Dr. Lucas and her family are excited about living in Carteret County and will work hard to maintain the high medical standards that attracted them here.
